Navigating Ethics: Comprehensive Overview of the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics

This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics. It highlights key ethical principles, standards, and their application in clinical practice. Participants will explore ethical decision-making, common dilemmas, and best practices for maintaining professional, competent, and culturally responsive counseling services.

1. Identify, describe, and explain three ethical principles that underlie the ACA Code of Ethics and discuss their application to professional counseling practice.
2. Analyze ethical issues presented in counseling case scenarios by applying relevant provisions of the ACA Code of Ethics, applicable laws, and professional standards.
3. Apply an ethical decision-making framework to counseling case scenarios to justify professional decisions that promote client welfare and ethical practice.

Ethical Counseling: Managing Counselor Loss, Vicarious Trauma, and Legal Duties in Counseling

This program explores counselor grief and vicarious trauma as ethical and legal practice issues. Using Texas LPC rules and ACA ethics, participants examine informed consent, client record responsibilities, and counselor wellness when client death, abrupt termination, or cumulative loss impacts professional functioning.

1. Identify at least three ways counselor grief or vicarious trauma can increase ethical or legal risk in counseling practice, including impacts on documentation, informed consent, and confidentiality.
2. Apply relevant Texas LPC rules and ACA ethical standards to determine appropriate actions regarding informed consent and client record management when counselors are affected by client loss or abrupt termination.
3. Differentiate counselor grief, vicarious grief, secondary traumatic stress, and vicarious trauma, and match each to at least one ethically appropriate wellness or consultation response.
4. Develop at least two concrete strategies for maintaining ethical counselor wellness, including consultation and practice safeguards, when grief or cumulative trauma impacts professional functioning.
